New Year's Day

To contact us Click HERE
New Year's Day is the first day of the year, January 1st.

The celebration of this holiday begins the night before on New Year's Eve, when Americans gather to wish each other a happy and prosperous coming year. At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, people cheer and sing "Auld Lang Syne." The song, which means "old long since" or roughly "the good old days," was written by Robert Burns in 1788.

Making New Year's resolutions – pledges to change for the better in the coming year – is a common activity associated with this holiday. It is traditional to make toasts on New Year's Eve as well. Typically, the old year is represented by "Father Time," an elderly man with a flowing gray beard, and the new year is represented by an infant.

One of the largest New Year's Eve celebrations in the world is at Times Square in New York City where the New Year's Eve Ball descends at the stroke of midnight. The "dropping of the ball" is a custom derived from harbor time signals, a common visual synchronization procedure once used primarily for navigation and astronomy. Times Square has been the center of worldwide attention since 1904 when the owners of One Times Square began conducting rooftop celebrations to usher in the new year.

New Year's Day is the oldest and most universal holiday. The Romans were the first to observe January 1 as New Year's Day in 153 B.C. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII instituted the Gregorian calendar still in use today, setting January 1 as New Year's Day. Prior to this, many countries celebrated the new year on April 1st in celebration with the new spring season. It was celebrated much the same way as it is today with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night. The origin of April Fools' Day can be traced to this change.

Quote of the Week:

Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work. – Aristotle

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. - T. S. Eliot, Poet

Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose. - Bill Gates

Feature Article of the Week:

Cheerleaders
This article assumes that you have chosen a goal, dream, or task for yourself. You may or may not have started implementing your step-by-step plans yet. Are you a bit shaky in your faith though? Maybe you have a tendency to doubt your ability to carry this thing out to completion. You need a support system that will hold you up when the road gets rocky.

Think about the people you know. Who believes in you? Who do you think would believe in your goal? Ask them to be your cheerleaders. Do not be discouraged if there is only one person whom you feel is truly safe and will give you unconditional support. Whether it is one person or one hundred does not matter. You decide how many cheerleaders you need for any given dream and which ones to choose.

Tell them your dream. Do not be squeamish or shy about it. Just say it aloud. Ask that they hold you to your highest potential and help you to not make excuses when you are afraid and want to quit. They will say yes and do it for you or you would not have chosen them to be your cheerleaders.

Jennifer and I had been friends for about three years when I had finally decided to start my own business as a motivational speaker and writer. I had been telling everyone for years that I would be doing this “someday”. While staying the weekend with her, she asked me how my new career was going. I told her I could not do it because I had been overcome by fear and doubt. I recited for her all the logical fears and doubts that I had come across. I pointed out how outsiders were also bringing up these same concerns and therefore they must be real and valid. There were just too many logical reasons to give up and quit.

She never responded. I felt as if I was talking to a wall. She just sat there with a blank look on her face. This was my very best friend. We were known for talk-a-thons that our husbands and children could not compete in and yet she was not saying a single word to me. She was not responding to my very real fears. I took it as validation that she must agree with me. And since it is her nature to be incredibly loving and supportive, she must not want to say it aloud. “Yep, Jen knows I bit off more than I can chew and is just too sweet to tell me the truth!”

Later that same evening, we were sitting at her kitchen table and I told her I was somewhat surprised that she did not utter a peep when I was telling her all the reasons I should not, could not, and would not start the business after all of these years of saying that I was going to do it. I assured her that I was not angry with her for not responding, but that I was just surprised. I had never known her to be speechless before that day.

She looked at me straight faced and said, “As long as I’ve known you, you were going to do this. I just figured you are still going to do it. Have you come up with a name for your business yet?” She then offered some ideas for business names. I pretty much hated all the ideas that she threw out at me. My daughter jumped in and suggested we call it “The Motivation Station”. Jen and I were laughing as we quickly discarded that idea. We pulled out paper and pens and started brainstorming business names. We were also playing around with designing a logo, letterhead, and business cards. I completely forgot that I had given up on starting my own business.

I did not choose a name until the next day while driving the four hours to get back home. She had planted the seed of naming my company. She had set me back into forward motion. She had simply stated her undying faith in me, carried my dream for me, continued forward with my dream when I did not think I could, and then handed it back to me when I was not paying attention. She expected me to live up to my best. She never doubted that I would keep moving forward and succeed.

Not only had I picked my dream back up, I had named the thing! I could not wait to get home because my next three or four steps were laid out for me. I had to register my business name with the state, print up business cards, and start doing trademark research. I could not wait to get back to work! Jennifer was a great cheerleader.

Originally, I had not thought to include the idea of a life coach in with the concept of cheerleaders. Now that I have chewed on it for a while, I think of them as professional cheerleaders. You may or may not feel unconditional love from them like you would a personal friend or relative, but they are making their living at being awesome cheerleaders. They are paid to give you “Rah! Rah!” speeches and to have clever ideas to help you when you hit those down times while on the road to living your dreams. Life coaches can definitely be of help. Like anything else, you get what you pay for, so shop wisely.

Even if you only have one cheerleader in your corner, know that they are perhaps your most valuable resource when battling against fear and self-doubt. Your cheerleader will carry your vision for you when you cannot see it clearly. Your cheerleader believes in you with or without your goals. Your cheerleader holds you accountable for your life choices. Your cheerleader will let you give your goals voice until you get used to hearing it said aloud to others.

Thank your cheerleaders by returning the favor. You can cheer them on with their goals and dreams too. What greater way is there to say “Thank you” or “I love you,’ then to be someone’s cheerleader?

Need someone to talk to about life's challenges?

New Year's Day

To contact us Click HERE
New Year's Day is the first day of the year, January 1st.

The celebration of this holiday begins the night before on New Year's Eve, when Americans gather to wish each other a happy and prosperous coming year. Looking Up Newsletter
Hello everyone,

I had to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles this morning. I arrived about five minutes before they opened and stood in line outside with everyone else. There were only about 30 people in line ahead of me. Yet, it took an hour before it was my turn to conduct business. My transaction took three whole minutes. The good news: I paid off my car loan and now have a clean and clear title. Yea!

take care,
Skye Thomas

Quote of the Week:

The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration. - Pearl S Buck

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. - Jane Goodall

Tug on anything at all and you'll find it connected to everything else in the universe. - John Muir

Feature Article of the Week:

Feeling Forgettable
My teenage daughter reminded me of something the other night. We were talking about things that were going on at school. She is in a drama class and is one of the teacher’s favorite students. However, when assigning roles for an upcoming show the students are putting on, the teacher completely forgot to put my daughter on the list. This was not one of those big school plays that students try out for and hope to get a role. This was a mandatory class project and was the equivalent of their mid-term or final exam. The teacher assigned each child to a group and the groups were assigned one-act plays to direct, rehearse, and then perform in front of the parents. My daughter was shocked that as one of the favorites in the class, that the teacher had completely forgotten to put her on the roster. She was frustrated because she ended up with a boring group doing a boring role while the rest of the teacher’s favorites had all been hand-picked for starring roles. She was not at all angry, just frustrated that the teacher would have forgotten her and therefore she ended up in a lesser role.

I told her that I had always been the same way… a student that was well liked by the teachers but completely forgettable. She then went on to say that she thinks that if she went back to any of the teachers that she had just two years ago, that they would not be able to remember her name. She feels completely forgettable. She knows that she is a good person, but that she is easily forgotten. Her friends forget to invite her to their get-togethers. Laughing together, we compared stories of being forgotten. I told her that my career in Corporate America was full of those kinds of stories where bosses would forget that I even existed at promotion time, yet would say how much they counted on me because I was so reliable and dependable. Such is the life of the good little worker-bee who does not cause problems and does not jump up and down saying, “Look at me! Look at me!” Show up on time every day, do your job well, stay out of trouble, remain likeable and politically neutral, and what do you get for it? Forgotten. Nobody remembers that you were ever there.

Does it matter? Does that mean anything in the big context of your life? Yes and no. If you have goals that involve promotions and somehow getting the public to acknowledge you, then yes it matters very much. You will not be able to follow your dreams if you stay in this forgettable state. If you have a full life, love what you do for a living, do not require any attention or recognition in order to advance within your chosen field, and you are secure in yourself, then no, it does not matter if they forget you the minute you walk out of the room. For a teenage girl wanting some popularity and notoriety, it matters. That same girl wants to be a doctor someday. Will being forgettable stop her? No, not likely. If you work in sales, the entertainment industry, or as a politician then yes being forgettable is career suicide. If you work in research industries, daycare, bill collections, nursing, or clerical positions then it really would not matter all that much if you are an unforgettable person or not. It really just depends on your career and what you want to do with it.

It matters most, in your personal life. If your friends and family forget that you exist, then unless you are an extreme introvert, you are going to have problems. It is one thing to be forgotten by your boss and coworkers, it is quite another thing to be forgotten by your family and friends. Most people in that situation end up feeling isolated, alone, and unlovable. Unfortunately, this also causes depression, self-esteem issues, and can lead to substance abuse. There is nothing worse than feeling as if nobody would notice or care if you dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow. Humans are social creatures. We were never designed to be hermits. We require positive loving contact with others. We need to travel in packs with like-minded folks who care about us. There is nothing more powerful than knowing that someone’s life has been deeply touched by you and that your existence makes someone’s little corner of the world a more beautiful place.

On some level, whether for career purposes or for our own socialization needs, we need to know that we are not completely forgettable. How do we become unforgettable? The easiest way to know that you will never be forgotten is to be as mean and ugly as you possibly can. Being a jerk makes people think about you, plot their life around avoiding you, and they naturally will bring up your name in conversations. Until the day I die, I will never forget a bill collector that was in charge of my school loans. Not because she was a bill collector, I have known many and have even been one for a few years. I have nothing against them and I do not think they are bad people. They have a tough job to do and they have to do it. I will always remember her because she made my life a living hell for about five years. She was dishonest, unethical, and unnecessarily cruel. Yes, I know that you do not want to be like that, but let us be honest. We all know people who are horribly mean for no good reason and they are unforgettable because of it.

The other route you can take is to be more than just a good kind dependable worker-bee. Be more than just a quiet loyal family member who does not bother others with your problems. You have to become bright with an inner light that people cannot quite explain. It comes from an inner source that cannot be taught. Think about the truly wonderful unforgettable people in your life, the ones who touched your heart in a way that you will never forget. They all have that mysterious something within that shines outward like a beacon of light for the rest of us. It can be an at-home mom that is strong, happy, and proud of her choices. It can be a teacher that changes troubled teens lives by igniting their self-confidence. It can be an employee who truly loves the company, their job, and is a dynamic source of positive office morale. It can be a teenage boy who is not afraid to walk up to a group of fellow students and with a big beaming smile, arms spread wide open ready for a hug from the girls, and just say “Hello ladies!” in that ridiculous way that makes them laugh. It is a combination of healthy self-esteem, a feeling of purpose and direction, and a willingness to share their love and light with everyone they meet. The combination is magnetic and unforgettable.
