Good morning,
I'm on track today to have about an hour, maybe two hours all to myself. What to do, what to do. I could go for a run (okay, it's a slow trot, but I like to call it running). I could take a much-needed nap. Or I could do a nice long quiet meditation on the beach.
Note to self: Stay away from Facebook and YouTube videos or you will never get to any of your lovely choices.
I hope you are carving a bit of time out for your own "mental health" breaks some time this week.

Practice, Practice, Practice
It may sound silly but the key to self-confidence and building more self-esteem is through practice. Practice what it is you want to feel more confident about and eventually, the confidence will show itself. That makes sense if we are talking about a skill like playing the piano. With enough practice, you naturally begin to get good at it and then you feel more confident. But what about tougher things like public speaking or meeting new people? How do you practice something that you are terrified to do in the first place?
If you have extreme self-esteem issues then you might want to seek professional help, but if you have determined that is not necessary, I would suggest that you start out by finding something that you genuinely love to do. Other than maybe reading books or doing crossword puzzles over coffee, most hobbies are a good place to start. Do you love to paint? Do you love to play a musical instrument? Do you love athletics? Find something that you love to do or that you think you would love to do. It is not important what it is other than that it would bring you into contact with people on a tiny level. Unless you are living in a cave somewhere, somebody is going to see your artwork, hear your music, or see you running around practicing your sport. You do not have to pick a big team-oriented thing, just something that fascinates you and will be noticeable. Then do it. Learn to draw, take music lessons, start playing basketball in your own driveway, whatever... just start doing something that you can really enjoy.
Keep doing it until you get really good at it. It does not have to necessarily become your new career, but that would be fun for you if it does. Practice often and with complete joy. Lose yourself in it. That is part of overcoming self-confidence issues is forgetting to think about yourself. Swim laps at the pool until you forget to care how you look. Get lost in something other than analyzing yourself. Fall in love with some hobby that takes your mind away from what others might think of you. Just keep practicing something you love until you get really good at it. It is your hobby and your love, so do not make any judgments over whether or not it is stupid to like doing whatever it is that you like doing. Just get on with it.
When you are in the moment -- writing music or designing websites or whatever it is you have chosen, take a moment to reflect on how far you have come. At some point, you are going to realize that you are not too bad. At another point, you will even think, "Hey, I'm pretty good at this." Someday, you will look up and notice that you are an expert or at the very least awesome at what you have chosen to do. Take that growing self-confidence that is connected to your hobby and begin channeling it into other areas. Depending on how much of a self-esteem problem you started out with it could be a matter of months or years before you are able to really see yourself in a new light. It is one thing to say that everyone has his or her unique and special talent. It is quite another to find and embrace yours.
Your talent will not be something you hate doing. Sure, I am really quite good at scrubbing the bathroom. You can conduct a white glove inspection when I am done, but that is not my special talent. That is not my special gift to the world. And it sure as heck never built an ounce of self-confidence for me. No, you have to really truly deeply love what it is you are doing or the talent won't show itself. You have to forget to think and lose all track of time while zoning out in the flow of creating, building, stretching, and growing with the hobby. Get to the point where you look up and notice what you have done, that you are impressed with yourself. Practice until you get to that point where you forget to judge yourself. You could very well end up making it into your career if there is a market for it. If there isn't... no harm done. You have got to build a can-do attitude around your ability to do something well.
Once you have learned something that well, you can begin stretching beyond your comfort zone and trying other things like public speaking. Okay so that might not happen right away, but once you have really mastered something, then you can always remind yourself that you are capable of success and you are capable of learning something new. Once you know that you can practice and learn new things, then the fear of new things is not nearly so immobilizing. You can step beyond your fears knowing that with enough practice you can master almost anything you set your mind to. At that point, you will not actually have a self-esteem problem anymore.
The point is that by playing around with something you love until you are very good at it, you will gain self-esteem and that is going to make it possible for you to hold your head high and to bravely step into other more frightening areas of life. Start out by practicing at something you love until you are good at it, and then move on to the other things that do not sound like much fun at all. You will know deep down that there is nothing to be afraid of. It all comes down to whether or not you believe that you are capable of learning something new. That is all. Self-confident people reassure themselves when walking into unknown territory by saying, "Well, I'll just have to wing it until I learn how to do it right. I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough." That comes from experiencing the positive effects of having practiced and learned something new. So go learn something new -- start with something fun.

Looking Up Newsletter
Good morning,
Years ago, I had a lot of readers asking all kinds of questions about spirit guides and guardian angels. There were articles being written all over the Internet about this topic. Yahoo chat groups went on and on about it. Now, I don't hear anything about it anymore. I cannot remember the last time anyone mentioned angels or spirit guides to me. Does anyone out there still focus on such things? Did the angels all go silent or did we just get bored with them? Just wondering whatever became of it.

The Power of Believing
This article is about a phenomenon I have observed. It is NOT about religion; so do not send hate mail. The phenomenon occurs regardless of what religious belief a person has chosen to embrace. For the sake of a universal voice, I am going to refer to angels rather than God, Goddess, Jesus, Mother Mary, Mohammed, Buddha, Aphrodite, Zeus, Allah, or any of the other entities that people pray to. Angels also will be used to cover the concepts of fairies, divas, sprites, the Tuatha de Danann, and all of the magical helpers of the cosmos. I am using the word 'angels' because as St. Thomas Aquinas said, "Angels transcend every religion, every philosophy, every creed. In fact angels have no religion as we know it...their existence precedes every religious system that has ever existed on earth." Remember that I write for a global audience with many different belief systems and I am trying to make a point without favoring, endorsing, or thumbing my nose at anyone else's religious belief systems. With that said... what is the phenomenon that I want to share with you today? There is an unexplainable magical power that comes from believing deep down in your heart of hearts that angels are real and that they are here to look after you. It does not matter if we ever prove that they are real or not. It is the belief that seems to trigger the magic.
What is the power that comes from believing in angels? We have all witnessed the power of prayer, especially in groups. We have seen loved ones heal from fatal illnesses. We have heard that angel voice whisper in our ear to avoid taking a flight before the plane crashed. We have transformed our lives simply through believing that a higher power was cheering us on. We have sobered up, found soulmates, and even earned a living by listening to the loving guidance that comes from our guardian angels. We have avoided pain, poverty, and sudden death by heeding their warnings. We have saved children, fed the hungry, and helped the dieing to transition over to the other side because we believed that is what our angels would have us do. We have learned what it really means to love one another because our angels told us that we needed to do so. We have learned how to say we are sorry and to really truly mean it because our angels told us it would make us stronger. We have learned universal laws like "do unto others as you would have done unto you," karma, "what comes around goes around," "live and let live," and "and it harm none, do what ye will." Why do all religions have some form of this rule? Because the angels want us to be free to explore life's mysteries and lessons, but to also be kind towards one another. Free Will is the name of the game here on earth. Thankfully we have the angels to look after us because we do not always do so well when left to our own devices. Nothing is more amazing than when miracles are performed in the name of angels. When we call on them for their help, guidance, and reassurances that we are doing the right thing and they send us a sign from the heavens that yes they are still there and yes they are still looking after us. Perhaps it is just the increased self-confidence mixed with a bit of serendipity, but magical amazing things do happen when we believe in angels.
How does the belief in angels create the power? Science can argue that it is the psychological effects created by faith that pushes us to search for signs of miracles. We believe they will happen, so we become more perceptive at a subconscious level, constantly searching and seeking for proof that our beliefs are valid. On some deeper level, we are choosing to ignore that which does not support our belief in angels. We only gather to our hearts that which verifies that angels really do exist. Clergy can argue that the fact that miracles happen is proof that whatever name and dogma they have given to the phenomena is absolutely true and real. How else can so many different religions be so completely positive that their particular version of heaven is real and proven? They argue that since the phenomenon exists, it proves that their explanation of the spirit world is valid. There are many holes in both theories. It does not seem to matter which form of god or goddess we pray to, we all have examples of beautiful magical results. Does that mean that we are all just psychologically tricking ourselves into performing our own miracles? Or does it mean that there is one god disguised as many different gods and goddesses so that everyone can relate on their own level? Does it mean that there are multiple entities at work and we have to pick and choose which one to pray to for each different topic? Even though Christians believe in one god, many of them also believe in patron saints that are in charge of different aspects of life. Is that so very different from the multiple Greek gods all answering to Zeus? Is that so different from the Pagan's beliefs? Are we even meant to find the real answers? Is mankind ever supposed to know 100% of the facts, the absolute truth, and without a doubt who or what it is that seems to work around, over, and through us? Personally, I don't care. I call them angels because it feels right and if that is the one true god's way of speaking to me, then so be it. Who am I to question how that creative life force chooses to express itself to me? Isn't that the point of blind faith? We cannot know for sure.
What can we do with the power that believing in angles can bring into our lives? We can transform ourselves from the inside. We can heal our childhood wounds with the help of angels. We can cure our bodies of many diseases. We can find creative outlets for the love that lies within our souls, expressing it through our daily works. With the belief in angels, we can detach ourselves from the need to force others to see things our way. We can trust that the angels know what they are doing and that they will touch the other person's heart in a way that is meaningful to them even if it seems stupid and wrong to us. Angels allow us to feel safe that mankind is not the very highest form of intelligence and that this is not as good as it gets in a cosmic sense. Please let there be someone or something in charge of my universe that is smarter, wiser, more loving, and more compassionate than those of us here on earth. What was it Jesus said? Something about only needing a mustard seed of faith to create miracles just as He was doing. Sounds like an angel's advice to me. Do angels ever come down in human form? Yes of course, we have heard the stories since the days of the caveman. Looking for something to believe in? Conduct yourself as if you were an angel, the rest will fall into place in its own perfect way.

The Domino Effect
It was not all that long ago that people rarely gave themselves permission to do anything for themselves. They stayed in bad marriages because the church and their communities would ostracize them for seeking a divorce. They set aside their personal dreams to toil away at the family business. Men would hear such things as, “Your father was a doctor, his father was a doctor, so you will be a doctor too.” Women would silently suffer through all sorts of abuse rather than shame their families by speaking out against those who would do such things. Men and women would work hard, sacrifice much, and never do anything to shame the family honor. They were not very happy, but they had things mapped out for them and the rules were clear.
As with all things human, the pendulum did swing. And it swung hard in the opposite direction. An entire generation grew up being called The Me Generation. The meaning of life became a personal quest for personal happiness, personal fulfillment, personal satisfaction, personal journeys, personal needs, and personal goals and dreams. To love someone meant to support them 100% in anything they wanted to do, even if it was bad or wrong. Unconditional Love became the pop phrase to describe the concept of “no matter what I do, you have to love me or else you are unenlightened.” Individual self-esteem became more important than manners, morals, ethics, integrity, and honor. As long as you are happy, then your personal journey is deemed holy and sacred, no matter what. They are not any happier and they seem lost not really knowing what they want or even what they stand for.
Personally, I am tired of listening to older generations whine about having to be unappreciated martyrs and younger generations acting like selfish brats. It is time for balance. Somewhere in between doing everything for others and doing everything for yourself, there has to be a place of true inner peace. In between focusing on ‘you’ and focusing on ‘me’, there has to be a ‘we’ that makes more sense. No man is an island. Even a hermit’s decisions and choices affect everyone who loves him and everyone who needs him.
If you decide to be a high school dropout and a drug addict, nobody can stop you. You can decide not to live up to your potential, because you would rather just hang out doing nothing all day. You can choose to hide away in a cave and avoid humanity because they are all a bunch of messed up losers anyway. It is your prerogative to become anything you set your mind to. I am the first one to tell you that you should be allowed to live your life any way that you choose. However, do not lie to yourself by telling yourself that you are not hurting anyone but yourself. In fact, you are hurting everyone who loves you. You are hurting everyone who was supposed to be touched by you and your special gifts.
You have a gift to give to the world and you can give it or you can throw it away, but do not think that you are the only one affected by that decision. Every person on this planet who was meant to be motivated, encouraged, and helped by the beauty of your soul is affected by you not showing up. Choosing to be a deadbeat is selfish and cruel. There are people who need you and you are turning your back on them, and for what? For the right to thumb your nose at society. Did you ever think that maybe that is why you are here – to become the solution, the cure to the ugliness that you see around you? Someone has to look at it and acknowledge it before it can be addressed and fixed. Your ability to look problems in the eye and call them by their rightful name is part of the solution. Your inability to sugarcoat things and pretend that nothing is wrong is part of the solution.
If a parent makes the decision to be successful and wealthy, their children are affected by it. They are affected by the wealth, the way people treat them for being the child of a wealthy successful member of the community, and by the amount of time and focus a parent has to put into achieving that level of success. In the same manner, a parent who chooses to live as a drunk and a stoner, role modeling addictions and poverty to their children has a huge effect on the way the world views those children. Is it the child’s fault their parents are flakes? No, but those children are going to be treated badly nevertheless. Right or wrong, we are judged by who our families are and by what they do. What you do effects how your community will treat the rest of your family.
If you decide to quit dating because it is just too hard to find the right one – or - you settle for someone who is just okay but not really ‘the one’, you are destroying someone else’s chances to ever have ‘happily ever after.’ You do not just hurt yourself by settling for less than true love, you hurt the one you are with, the one they should be with, and you hurt the one that you should be with.
If you are an employee who only does the bare minimum it takes to keep from getting fired, you are not just hurting yourself. You are hurting the company. You are hurting the people who have to go in behind you and work extra to finish the work you did not bother to do. You are hurting the children and spouses of those people who have to work late because you cannot be bothered to do your best.
Yes, you have a right to live your life any way that you please. You have a right and an obligation to yourself to find personal happiness and fulfillment in your choices. But you also need to remember that we are all interconnected and when you slack off, intentionally fail, or give up… you are creating a domino effect and it does affect everyone that you come into contact with, everyone they come into contact with, and everyone that you were meant to come into contact with. Nothing you do is ever really personal. Your personal happiness and the happiness of those around you lies somewhere in between martyr and spoiled brat. Find your place and you will find your peace.

Hello everyone,
I am on the hunt for a low salt recipe for Sausage Seasoning that I can sprinkle on lean meats and give it that sausage smell and flavor while avoiding the high fat and high salt elements of traditional sausages. I found a decent chicken sausage at the store, but it was still high sodium. Does anyone know how to mix up a batch of yummy sausage seasonings without using too much salt?

Secret Savings Fund
If you are anything like most Americans, then you have a hard time setting money aside for a rainy day. We are supposed to put it away before we spend a dime on anything else, but just knowing it is there can be half the problem. Knowing that there is still money at the end of the month can be tempting when the craving for pizza and movies comes along. I have found an easy way to save money without knowing that I am saving it. This method will work no matter how rich or poor your bank account is.
It involves a manipulation of the checkbook register. Normally, if you write a check for $10 then you deduct $10 from your register just like always. To secretly save money, change the way you are recording your transaction. When you are keeping track of your checks or debit card payments, lie to yourself. Round up to the nearest number ending with a 5 or a 0. If you write a check for $9.50, then you would deduct $10. You have just added $0.50 into your savings account. Not much but keep at it. When you write a check for $10.50, subtract $15 from your register. You have just added $4.50 into your secret savings fund. Not only did you net $5 into your secret savings with those two transactions, but you have also simplified the math a lot!
When you make deposits, round down to the nearest 0 or 5. For example, if you deposit $918 into your account, then only add $915 to your register. If you add $1104 then only add $1100. Again, you’ve added $7 into your secret savings fund with two deposits.
I have done this for years and have found that the average savings per transaction is about $2.33. You would think that it would be $2.50 because that’s half way in between $0 and $5. Whenever you are reconciling your checkbook, it becomes much easier. You check off each transaction that the bank has processed. You add to the bank’s total any deposits that are not recorded yet. Then subtract any outstanding checks or debit payments. The bank’s grand total should be bigger then your own because of all of the times that you have lied to yourself saying that you spent more then you did or deposited less then you did. The difference between what the bank says you have and what you say you have is how much you have saved. Ta da! You will be amazed at how fast the money adds up. The more transactions you run through your account the faster you will build a savings.
Years ago as a struggling single mom without child support, I was able to pay for family vacations, school clothes, and even the down payment on a car with money that I had hid from myself this way. I cannot tell you how many times I would remember that hidden money just in time to pay for a much needed car repair or children’s birthday parties when there was no money in the budget for such things. I promise you that you never really notice the missing money and it can really brighten your day when you suddenly realize that it is there when you need it most. It is kind of like putting on your favorite jacket at the beginning of winter and finding a $20 bill that you had forgotten all about.

I am on the hunt for a low salt recipe for Sausage Seasoning that I can sprinkle on lean meats and give it that sausage smell and flavor while avoiding the high fat and high salt elements of traditional sausages. I found a decent chicken sausage at the store, but it was still high sodium. Does anyone know how to mix up a batch of yummy sausage seasonings without using too much salt?

Secret Savings Fund
If you are anything like most Americans, then you have a hard time setting money aside for a rainy day. We are supposed to put it away before we spend a dime on anything else, but just knowing it is there can be half the problem. Knowing that there is still money at the end of the month can be tempting when the craving for pizza and movies comes along. I have found an easy way to save money without knowing that I am saving it. This method will work no matter how rich or poor your bank account is.
It involves a manipulation of the checkbook register. Normally, if you write a check for $10 then you deduct $10 from your register just like always. To secretly save money, change the way you are recording your transaction. When you are keeping track of your checks or debit card payments, lie to yourself. Round up to the nearest number ending with a 5 or a 0. If you write a check for $9.50, then you would deduct $10. You have just added $0.50 into your savings account. Not much but keep at it. When you write a check for $10.50, subtract $15 from your register. You have just added $4.50 into your secret savings fund. Not only did you net $5 into your secret savings with those two transactions, but you have also simplified the math a lot!
When you make deposits, round down to the nearest 0 or 5. For example, if you deposit $918 into your account, then only add $915 to your register. If you add $1104 then only add $1100. Again, you’ve added $7 into your secret savings fund with two deposits.
I have done this for years and have found that the average savings per transaction is about $2.33. You would think that it would be $2.50 because that’s half way in between $0 and $5.
